So, you’ve decided to start knitting, but what tools do you need to get started, and what tools will make learning this incredible skill easier?
Looking around your local craft store it can be easy to get distracted by all the exciting yarns, the seemingly endless amount of knitting needles, and the wall of knitting accessories. But getting started knitting doesn’t need to be complicated.
Check out our list of the essential tools to get you started.
1. Knitting needles
There are a few different types of knitting needles. The main ones are:
Straight needles, great for knitting flat pieces
Circular needles, great for knitting hats, blankets, and jumpers
Double pointed needles, great for small projects such as mittens and socks.
Each needle type can be bought in a range of sizes and varying materials. Check your pattern for recommendations of the best kind to choose. It is also a good idea to experiment with different needle styles.
2. Yarn
Looking for yarn for your knitting is one of the most exciting parts, in my opinion. There are so many different weights, fibers, and color combinations to choose from.
The aspect of buying yarn for the first time can be overwhelming but you don’t need to buy an expensive skein for your first project. Yarn ranges from a $1 a ball up to $20+
Just remember that the cheapest yarn can be scratchy and stiff to work with if you're just learning. The best advice I can give you is to go shopping and feel lots of yarn.
3. Stitch Markers
Stitch markers are a must-have to help you keep track of our pattern or mark your row. They come in varying forms and can either slip straight onto your needle or be clipped onto stitches.
4. Scissors
Any pair of scissors will do but sharp ones are best so that when you cut your yarn you get a clean cut. Buy a small pair to put in your notions bag, so you can take your knitting with you when you leave the house.
5. Tapestry Needle
A blunt needle with a big eye is a must for weaving in yarn at the end of a project.
Extra tools that make knitting easier
1. Sock blockers
Anyone knitting socks needs to invest in sock blockers. There is nothing better than finishing knitting a pair of socks and then seeing them come to life while being blocked into shape. You will especially be amazed seeing cable work open up while using sock blockers. Check out the sock blockers we offer here at Silly Monkey, available in both adult sizes and kids sizes. We even have mitten, glove & sock blockers set.
2. Crochet Hook
Even if you can't crochet a stitch, a crochet hook is an invaluable tool when knitting. They are great for picking up and fixing dropped stitches or knitting a provisional cast on.
3. Swift and Winder
Although as a beginner you can get by without these tools you will be extremely glad you invested in them. A swift holds your skein of yarn and a winder winds the yarn into a ball or ‘cake’, making the process a hundred times quicker than winding by hand.
4. Knitting pattern holder
Keep your knitting pattern neat and organized with a knitting pattern holder. These are perfect if you are completing color work or have a complicated cable pattern to follow. Magnets holder your pattern in place and move easily so you can keep track of your pattern. Check out the knitting pattern holder we offer here at Silly Monkey.
